Successful Offseason

The Keys to a Successful Off-Season

A successful off-season comes down to two things: creating a plan and having the discipline to execute it.

Creating Your Plan

Every player is different, and improvement starts with understanding your strengths and weaknesses. Just because one quarterback focuses on a specific area doesn’t mean you should do the same. One quarterback may need to build arm strength, while another must refine their footwork. Your off-season plan should reflect your individual needs.

A Cautionary Note

As quarterbacks, we sometimes fall into the trap of taking responsibility for things beyond our control. This can misguide our off-season focus. For example, if you missed a receiver because you expected him to run his route at 10 yards, but he ran it at 15, that’s not necessarily something you need to fix. It may sound obvious, but because quarterbacks are leaders, we often focus on external factors instead of what we can directly improve.

There is a time to lead the team, and there is a time to focus on your personal development. The off-season is for you to put together a plan to improve your game.

The Importance of Self-Sufficiency

Quarterbacks who can identify ways to improve on their own will always have an advantage. At every new level of competition, you move down the depth chart and may not be the primary focus of the coaching staff. If you can take ownership of your development, you’ll be better positioned to climb back up.

Looking Ahead

In the next few posts, we’ll break down different ways to analyze your game and build a structured weekly plan to create a routine that helps you reach your goals. In the meantime, take some time to reflect on what you need to improve. Last season is still fresh in your mind, so now is a great time to write down a few key areas for growth and start brainstorming how to get better.
